Ages 6 to 14
At Lavner Robotics & Technology campers will use LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT 2.0 to learn the fundamentals of building a wide variety of robots. By learning important principles and working in teams, campers will acquire the ability to create robots from their imagination, in addition to following instructions for specific robotics. The Lego® Mindstorms® NXT 2.0 product line allows for hundreds of possibilities of Robots, and each week at camp will present new ideas and projects. In addition to building, campers will learn how to program robots by computer, and will work in teams.
Staff: Our Technology Instructors are super smart, love to teach kids, and are very passionate about technology. They are currently studying or have graduated from Colgate, Columbia, Drexel, University of Pennsylvania Engineering and SAS, and Temple. Our great staff will ensure that your child learns, has tons of fun, and builds confidence!
Curriculum:
Campers are divided into two levels to ensure the best experience possible.
Level 1 is for campers trying Robotics for the first time, or with little experience. Campers in this level will learn the basics of Robotics, successfully build and program at least two robots during the week, and use them to complete tasks that are competitive and non-competitive. Campers learn and implement sensors for color, touch, light, ultrasonic capability, and sound.
Level 2 is for campers who are at the intermediate or advanced level, and will focus on more difficult robots either offered by Legos or by inventors who publish their own designs. These robots may include using multiple bricks, blue tooth, and remote control. Campers exhibiting a high level will also be asked to either partially or fully “invent” their own robotic design and implement building, programming, and successful completion of tasks. These students will learn trial and error, the importance of using imagination, and the rewarding feeling of creating something that is totally “their own.”
Students at all levels will participate in ROBOWARS at the end of the week, a camp highlight and favorite with a variety of cool robots that detect color, movement, and touch, triggering shooting reactions, offensive and defensive movement, and the battle for victory!
Break For Snack: At 10:15am campers receive a 15 minute break outside to eat a snack and may participate in a short exercise of the day (e.g. organized relay races).
Lunch/Optional Physical Activities: From 11:30am to 1:00pm campers eat their lunch and participate in fun organized activities where they can exercise. While physical exercises are not mandatory, participation is encouraged. Some examples are capture the flag, relay races, 501, 7 up, and team building games. Campers are able to let out some energy and are ready for the afternoon session!
