Video Game Programming & Design

Ages 6-14

Campers will learn how to create their own video games by using Multimedia Fusion 2.0® and Games Factory 2®. No previous experience is necessary. However, more complicated projects are offered to campers based upon their age and ability. Starting from scratch, campers will start with a single frame where they place objects, scenery, and a scoreboard. They will then use the events editor to program how objects will behave in this environment. The game will then be expanded to multiple frames and levels. The result will be a complete multi-level Arcade and/or Platform game.

Staff: Our Technology Instructors are super smart, love to teach kids, and are very passionate about technology.  They are currently studying or have graduated from Colgate, Columbia, Drexel, University of Pennsylvania Engineering and SAS, and Temple.  Our great staff will ensure that your child learns, has tons of fun, and builds confidence!

Curriculum:

In addition to using objects and scenery from MultiMedia Fusion 2.0® and Games Factory 2®, campers will bring outside objects and scenery that they design into the game. In this sense, campers learn not only programming logic, but also animation and design. Multi-level decision making will teach campers to consider the game as a whole, beyond just a single frame, and encourages vision and planning. Decisions will be made by the campers with the guidance of the instructor. Game options include Pong, Mazes, Adventure Games, Space Shooters (Asteroids), and Action Games.

Campers will also save their games to CDs, and create a packaging design with game description, rating, and reviews. Campers not only learn how to create video games, but how to present and market them to the public. And the best part, all campers will take home their games to enjoy with family and friends! Campers may sign up for one week, or multiple weeks, because there are many types of games that can be created at all skill levels!  Specialized curriculum is designed for campers who are beginners, intermediates, and advanced.

Break For Snack: At 10:15am campers receive a 15 minute break outside to eat a snack and may participate in a short exercise of the day (e.g. organized relay races).

Lunch/Optional Physical Activities:  From 11:30am to 1:00pm campers eat their lunch and participate in fun organized activities where they can exercise.  While physical exercises are not mandatory, participation is encouraged.  Some examples are capture the flag, relay races, 501, 7 Up, and team building games.  Campers are able to let out some energy and are ready for the afternoon session!
